Traditionally, a website would be designed for a large lump sum. Once ready, it would be uploaded to a server (website hosting) and linked to a web address (domain name), and you would be expected to renew the domain name each year, and pay either monthly or annual website hosting.
As far as you were concerned, that was it. Your website was live and that's all there was to it. Each month/year, you would be asked to renew your services, sometimes these may occur on separate dates, and you might question if you had already paid that bill earlier on. This is where the headaches begin!
Over time, parts or all of your website would stop working or display unexpectedly. This may be because when your website was originally built, it may have linked to a third-party services, such as Google Maps or to a social media account. These links were probably in the form of an API (Application Programming Interface). Without your knowledge, the company providing that API may have changed or completely redesigned the way that it works, leaving your website confused. The map to your location is not longer displaying, the contact form is no longer sending you emails, the area reserved to display your social media posts is now blank. Once you have calmed down and informed your website designer, the changes were fixed and you were presented with another bill.
Does this sound familiar?
The internet is a truly wonderful thing, when it works. As it has grown in popularity, it has also evolved. A consensus was formed to make the internet better in various ways. Increased security from potential hackers, responsive websites which automatically adjust the layout to suit the device you are using so as to make them easier to read and navigate, and RIP Flash. Your website needs to evolve with the times. It also ideally needs to contain fresh content, so that it is more appealing to potential visitors to your site.
